1. Preface

In many highway engineering construction applications ,emulsion aspalt provides a more safer ,energy-saving and environmental protection system that can avoid high temperature operation ,heating and harmful emissions .Emulsion aspahlt is mainly used for road upgrade and maintenance , such as stone chips seal ,and also some special application which other asphalt materials can’t replace ,such as cold mix ,slurry seal .

2. The advantages and economy of emulsion asphalt

2.1 The multifuction proprty

Emulsion asphalt has many uses . Because its scope of application is very wide ,you should choose the suitable using method .

2.2 Energy conservation

The content of kerosene or gasoline in dilutued asphalt can reach 50% while the value is only 2% in emulsion asphalt .So it is a important act of saving energy .

2.3 Convenient to use

Emulsion needs professional spreader while applying to a small area ,you can spread it by hand . If a small area need to repair ,you only need basic equipment .

3 The application of emulsion asphalt in highway engineering

3.1Classification of road damage

(1) Deformation and distortion

Plastic deformation caused by over load .

(2) Crack

Crack caused by many reason . For example , fatigue cracks are caused by loss of pavement stiffness and repeated rolling of traffic vehicles.

(3) Rupture

As time goes by , road surface become aging gradually . Aging degree of asphalt depend on the environmental .

(4) Peel

Water erosion:because some asphalt is sensitive to water,especially under the pressure of cars and pore water .It causes loss of asphalt adhesion and pavement collapse .

3.2 The application of emulsion asphalt

(1)Slurry seal

Slurry seal is a kind of cold mix of asphalt mixture ,which has the advantages of aggregate and asphalt mixing . In general ,similar grade slurry seal has higher modulus than hot mix aspahlt ,so it is often used to fill pavement ruts.

(2) Rut repair

Using micro-seal mixture method to repair pavement ruts will last a long time , it will takes about 8-10 years for hot asphalt mixtures . Obviously,correct mixtures design and paving are very important . The cost of micro-seal is less than that of hot asphalt mixture.There is no need to grind the normal rutting pavement ,because enulsion asphalt allowa wet pavement and good adhesion property . The basic cost of materials used on worksite is small .

(3) Surface repair

Usually ,in residential area ,slurry seal can last 4-8 years according to original pavement . Apply micro seal or polymer modified slurry seal on highway ,its service life will reach 8 years .

(4) Stone chip cover

At present , there are many kinds of governance methods of road surface,among which stone chips cover and spreading seal are the most commonly methonds of road maintenance.

4.Concluding remarks

When using emulsion asphalt ,there’s no need to heat,you can work at room temperature .It is widely used not only in highway engineering ,but also building roof , cavern waterproofing and anti-corrosion of medal surface .As the development of society ,the prospects of emulsion aspahlt will be more and more broad.
